Yes, Dawson! We'll Set the Trap Off NOW!!
by Tekkactus

This isn’t something I can say without feeling a little bit of angst, so let’s just get it out of the way. Sandgate is going to stop updating for the long-term, indefinite future.

I could say that the circumstances were a long story, but really, it’s pretty simple. I started drawing Sandgate officially in my junior year of high school, after about a year of prep work. After graduating high school, I lived at home for two years while attending community college, which is also now complete. My point is, and here comes Tekk’s shocking and terrible secret: I don’t own my own computer. Never have. For the past four years, I’ve been doing Sandgate from home on the family PC. This weekend I move out, and I just can’t afford my own computer right now.

In other words, starting this weekend I’ll have no reliable access to Photoshop or a scanner for the foreseeable future. While there are computer labs at the university (I am going to art school, after all), drawing comics only during lab hours is both negligent of school responsibilities and awkward, since I don’t want to be “that guy who’s on Photoshop 8 hours a day every day”. So, the basic gist is until I have a couple hundred extra dollars to spend on a tower, no Sandgate.

This isn’t a decision I’m coming to lightly. I knew this was looming all summer, and as it got closer to today it became apparent this was the only real option. I know that Sandgate has gone through some long dry spells when it comes to updates, but this is the first time in four years that I’ve actually said “ok, this is getting shelved”. For the past half-decade, at least sixty percent if not more of all of my creative output has been Sandgate related. Even during the no-update periods I was drafting story ideas, building up buffers, designing characters, polishing the site, and generally thinking of ways to improve my obscure little comic about ghosts. Sandgate has been a huge part of my life for a very long time and it’s not easy for me to step back and do other things when this is a basic part of my routine.

So, thanks to everyone who’s stuck around these past few years. That includes especially big thanks to the guys over at Sam and Fuzzy, for being the ones I can always bounce ideas off, get support from, and who will let me know when I’m really dicking something up. Sandgate wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for your support, and I’m overflowing with gratitude for that.

I want to stress that Sandgate is far, FAR from being gone for good. I’ll resume updating better than ever as soon as is feasible. My life goal has been to whittle this story into something worth publishing (and then getting it published) so abandoning it in favor of art school is both ironic and silly. I promise you from the bottom of my wretched boogey-man heart that I will make sure you see this story through, just the way I see it coming together in my head, in my sketchbooks, on post-it notes, and everywhere else. There are questions that have gotta be answered, and I’m not gonna give up until they are. Who’s that guy following Trish around? (Ok, this one I think is really friggin’ easy if you’ve been paying any attention at all.) What was that thing that gave Willit his powers? Why did Fingers want to talk with Tooth in private at the end of Chapter 3? Who beat the crap out of Rosewood? (You’ll learn this one in shortly after I come back, don’t worry.) What in the hell is a Sandgate, anyway? These are things that are answered by the end of Chapter 5… and then the trouble really starts. Zombies, serial killers, trouble with the Cinderhearts, and more ghosts than you can wag a finger at. I’m just getting warmed up… but the engine stalled. Please be patient with me.

See ya around,

The Webcomic Acid Test
by Tekkactus

I saw this test for quality of a webcomic posted on /co/, and, well...

Q: DOES THE PLOT MAKE SENSE, MORE OR LESS?

More or less. I've gotten a couple of continuity complaints (you can't just jump in and expect to understand everything), but as a whole everything fits together.

Q: DO ANY OF THE CHARACTERS TIP OFF THE MARY-SUE LITMUS TEST? DOES MORE THAN ONE?

Trish skirts it sometimes; I'm well aware that she's a very pretty, very smart deadpan snarker that likes nerd stuff. It makes me cringe a little sometimes how much I've loaded her skill-set. She's saved in that she's hard to get along with and has some real self-image issues, but it gets dangerous sometimes.

Q: DOES THE CREATOR'S ART IMPROVE OVER TIME?

You better fucking believe it does. Holy crap the early strips were awful.

Q: IS THE COMIC ALMOST ENTIRELY PORNOGRAPHIC OR FETISH-RELATED?

No. Not even a little.

Q: IS THE CREATOR A DICK? (SEE ALSO: CHRIS-CHAN, TIM BUCKLEY, JAY NAYLOR)

Not to my readers, I'm not.

Q: DOES THE COMIC HAVE A SCHEDULE THAT IT ACTUALLY KEEPS TO MOST OF THE TIME?

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. Ok, I fail this one.

Q: IS IT A FUCKING SPRITE COMIC? TELL ME IT'S NOT A SPRITE COMIC.

I copy-paste backgrounds sometimes; I hope you forgive me.

Critical Existance Failure
by Tekkactus

Heyyyy GUYS. I'm not sure if you noticed, but I've missed an update or two. There is a real reason for this, though! See, I was almost ready to finish up a comic for today, when my printer/scanner/copier/fax combo up and died. So I can't Scan...dgate.

No comics for a couple days while I search for a replacement or something! I think this is something you should be used to, but I figgered I should keep you all in the know.

One Hill Climbed
by Tekkactus

Well, the archive has been moved over successfully, so that's one chore done. Now I need to figure out how to transfer over the old fanart and cast pages despite barely knowing HTML... and making a new banner... and general site spiffin'.

Once all this is done, I'm sure it'll be awesome!

I Know It's Terrible
by Tekkactus

Heyo, kids, adults, and everything in between! I'm currently in the process of transferring my 100+ page archive from my old host at Web Comics Nation to this new site. Don't judge the comic by what you might be seeing now; chances are the "latest page" is 2-3 years old! Until I get everything settled and moved in, I recommend taking a peek at http://www.webcomicsnation.com/sandgate/sandgate_wcn/series.php to get a better representation of Sandgate is like.
